Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader called on Thursday for the dismissal of Laura Codruța Kovesi, Head of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), accusing her of “excess of authority, discretionary behavior, defying the Parliament, challenging the Constitutional Court’s decisions and authority”.
“For these acts and facts that are intolerable in a rule of law, I start the procedure to revoke the DNA Chief Prosecutor”, Toader concluded after presenting his report on the management of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who has the final say on the removal of chief prosecutors, said in a statement that Toader’s report was unclear and needed analysis. “The President has repeatedly said he was satisfied by the activity of DNA and its leadership, an opinion he continues to have”, the statement says.
Romanian Attorney General, Augustin Lazăr, reaffirmed that there is no legal reason for the revocation of the DNA Chief.
Augustin Lazăr has repeatedly stated that the activity of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate is an efficient one and that there is no valid reason for the revocation of Laura Codruta Kovesi from the post of Chief Prosecutor of DNA.
