European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker wishes that until the end of his mandate as Head of the EU Executive, this summer, to put an end to the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) applied to Romania in the field of justice.
On a two-day visit to Bucharest for the ceremonies that officially marked the takeover by Romania of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Jean-Claude Juncker also announced his support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen free movement area:
Jean-Claude Juncker: I would like, if I can express my wish, that during the mandate of this Commission, Romania will enter the Schengen area. I see no reason why some governments have stubbornly refused this. We keep in touch with the most recalcitrant and we try to convince them to say "Yes" for Romania's accession to Schengen. In 2014, I have committed, in front of the European Parliament, to put an end to the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. I remain faithful to this promise, provided that all efforts are made both on the Romanian side and the European one, so that everything is done in good conditions. I would like to end my mandate by making Romania a member of the Schengen area and by putting an end to the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.
