Romania will do more to achieve, by 2030, the goals of the United Nations on sustainable development - President Klaus Iohannis said in his speech addressed on 25 September in New York during the 74th General Assembly of the United Nations.
These include poverty eradication, quality education, clean energy - at affordable prices - and urgent measures to combat climate change. Environmental issues are also in the attention of world leaders these days in New York at the UN summit.
As President Iohannis said, Romania was not bypassed by the adverse effects of climate change, reason why there were initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Klaus Iohannis also referred to the fight against terrorism, according to RRA Special Envoy Alina Stănuţă: "The Head of State condemned, in his intervention, the terrorist attacks and reiterated Romania's firm commitment to fight terrorism at international level.
President Klaus Iohannis: "Recently, such attacks in Kabul, Afghanistan, ended the lives of two Romanian citizens and seriously injured another one.
I reiterate Romania's firm commitment to combating terrorism at the international level, using all available tools".
Climate change is a global challenge, said President Klaus Iohannis, who noted that Romania's National Strategy in the field was designed to form a low-carbon economy.
President Klaus Iohannis: "Climate change is undoubtedly a global challenge, from water scarcity and food insecurity to rising levels of seas and oceans.
I thank the Secretary General for his leadership in generating a significant agenda on this topic throughout this year.
Romania was not bypassed by the adverse effects of climate change, but I came to this session of the General Assembly with hope and responsibility.
The hope that it is not too late to have a safe planet, where the environment is protected for our children and the responsibility to take concrete steps to fulfill the commitments made by the Paris Agreement and the rules agreed at Katowice, including by continuing efforts to limit the increasing global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level".
