Romania is going through a period of deep social discontent and frustration, but this has nothing to do with citizens' attachment to NATO and the European Union.
On the contrary, a recent sociological survey shows that 90% of Romanians reject the idea of leaving NATO, a record level of adherence to the North Atlantic Organization.
The survey was conducted by INSCOP Research, commissioned by the organization Funky Citizens, and the data was collected in the second half of December 2024, after the annulled presidential elections.
The research also shows that Romanians are resilient to misinformation, and the aggressive reactions in the public space after the annulment of the elections actually led to increased resilience and national solidarity.
Remus Ioan Stefureac, director of INSCOP: What is happening in Romania has nothing to do with a decline in Romanians' adherence to the Euro-Atlantic /.../. It has to do, instead, with internal problems, economic problems, social problems, problems related to the lack of trust in the political class, lack of integrity, lack of professionalism, the feeling of, let's say, rigging the game so that one side can win. The figures are more than relevant. Basically, we have an increase in 3 years of 10 percent in the adherence to the western direction. Perhaps even these latest events on the political scene and, of course, the tension that has built up have clarified the waters a little, because today we have 72% to 73% of Romanians, almost three quarters of whom believe that joining the European Union has brought rather more advantages.
The research presented on Tuesday is considered one of the most relevant published by INSCOP in recent years, providing a clear insight into social discontent and the factors influencing Romanians' perceptions in the current geopolitical context.
