Ministry for Romanians Abroad is hosting the Informal meeting of EU ministers on diaspora policies on the 18th of March 2019 at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.
Officials from 17 EU Member States (ministers, secretaries of states, ambassadors of Latvia, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, Italy, Belgium, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Poland, Ireland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Germany) are to attend the meeting that puts forward an agenda related to diaspora policies from two main perspectives: integration of EU diaspora in the host countries, as well as strategies aimed at supporting the returning process in the countries of origin.
Key point is exchange of best practices between European leaders and experts from EU countries with large diasporas. Topics will focus on ways in which European countries have established economic and cultural relations with diaspora; initiatives adopted to support its linguistic and cultural development; policies that led to rapid integration of diasporas and policies aimed at supporting the returning process of their citizens in the countries of origin. Also an important point is presentation and consultation of various national diaspora strategies in countries where such strategy exists.
Minister for Romanians Abroad, Natalia Intotero: It is the first time that a country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union organizes and conducts events dedicated to the Diaspora. It is an extraordinary moment to discuss with the 17 representatives of the EU Member States about projects, diaspora programs, but also to exchange good practices.
