Increase in antibiotic consumption

In Romania, during this period, the consumption of antibiotics, such as azithromycin, increased a lot, draws attention the president of the Romanian Society of Microbiology, Alexandru Rafila.
He said that there are people who use these drugs indiscriminately, in an attempt to prevent infection with the new coronavirus or to treat COVID-19.
In his opinion, self-medication is very serious because usually antibiotics are prescribed only in bacterial infections, not viral ones.
Rafila pointed out in a panel discussion that azithromycin does have an effect on the new coronavirus, but its mass use is very dangerous because the effects of the drug are serious.
