Producer: In Romania, only half of the cardiological interventions that the population would need are performed, says the head of the Cardiovascular Cardiology Clinic in Targu Mures, doctor Horatiu Suciu. In his opinion, the construction of a new "heart institute" in Targu Mures will lead to a substantial increase in the number of operations. Marcela German reports.
Reporter: Doctor Horatiu Suciu explained that in Romania, more than ten thousand interventions are needed annually for patients suffering from heart disease, but only about six thousand are performed; some are done at the Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases and Transplantation in Targu Mures.
Horatiu Suciu: The only unit in the country that manages to cover the entire range of activities with good results. The problem is that it is not enough because, further, the infrastructure, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Romania is far, far below the required level.
Reporter: The number of interventions will increase from 2026, when the new "heart institute" financed by the NRRP should be completed. It is hoped that work will begin in the second part of this year.
Horatiu Suciu: The fact that we will be able to move our activity to a unit that really looks like a 21st century hospital will lead to a substantial increase in the number of interventions. We will not have more beds, instead we will have more operating rooms, more areas where these cardiological activities will be performed with much greater efficiency.
Reporter: The Institute in Targu Mures prepared the project for the new hospital in record time and it also obtained the highest score and a financing of 105 million euros.
