Law enforcement officers found 1.4 tons of heroin in a container carrying various construction materials.
They were brought to Romania by an international criminal group of Romanian and foreign citizens.
The drugs were destined for Western Europe.
Diana Surdu has details: "Almost a ton and a half of heroin was discovered by the police of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, together with DIICOT prosecutors - the central structure, with the support of DIE representatives, from the US Embassy in Romania, Europol and Eurojust, in the Port of Constanta. In order to dismantle the criminal group that allegedly trafficked the drugs, searches were carried out in Romania and in two Western European countries.
Oana Patu, chief prosecutor of DIICOT: The drugs, with high purity, have a black market value of over 45 million euros and were transported in containers that arrived in the Port of Constanta by sea. The heroin was loaded in Iran and was destined for Western European countries.
So far, nine members of the organized criminal group have been found, including its leader, and appropriate procedural steps will be taken."
DIICOT representatives recalled that last year the Romanian authorities seized over 4 million Captagon tablets and 1.5 tons of hashish.
