"Romanian doctor looking for a new country", seems to be the motto of more and more doctors who leave abroad in hope of better working conditions and better pay.
In 5 years, the education system has produced 7,000 doctors, while 10,000 have left the country during the same period, says Vasile Astarastoae, the president of the College of Physicians in Romania.
The state must show social responsibility and protect the health of its citizens.
According to the health minister, Eugen Nicolaescu, a law is being drafted to ensure better pay for doctors, based on achievement and competitiveness, so that they don’t have to look at the West as the "land of promise".
Doctors will also be given the choice of half-time employment, combining the state and private systems, but will not be allowed to convince patients to switch between the two systems.
