Each year, on October 9, Romania marks the National Day of Commemorating the Holocaust, following a decision by the government in 2004 at the proposal of the International Holocaust Research Commission in Romania, led by Nobel Peace prize winner Elie Wiesel.
Holocaust Day in Romania was marked by “cultural activities, symposiums, roundtables and other themed actions”. A solemn event was held in Bucharest at the Holocaust Victims Memorial.
Elisabeth Ungureanu, representative of the “Elie Wiesel” National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania: This commemoration is a good opportunity to emphasize once again the open and constructive attitude, in the spirit of the European values, of the main institutions of the Romanian state.
Democracy, peace, diversity and respect for human rights represent the fundamental values of the European construct that we need to defend with all our energy, President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, said on Tuesday in the message sent with the occasion of the Holocaust Remembrance Day in Romania. Head of the Romanian state also decorated Holocaust survivors at the Cotroceni Palace.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated each year on January 27, according to a United Nations resolution adopted on 1 November 2005.
