RADIO ROMANIA NEWS: High blood pressure is responsible for 60% of deaths in Romania due to the cardiovascular complications it causes.
For this reason, the foundation for "Life without hypertension" has launched a new study that aims to make a correct estimate of the number of people who have this condition, but also to propose to the authorities the directions in which to act.
Reporter: Adriana Turea - "The SEPHAR Follow-up study started on May 17 and runs until July 20. Mobile units, equipped with the necessary equipment, go to 14 localities across the country. Only those who participated in the previous study are invited to this evaluation and up until now 1.000 people have been examined - explained the president of the Foundation "Life without hypertension" professor doctor Maria Dorobantu.
Maria Dorobantu: Laboratory tests are done, all free for participants. Electrocardiograms, echocardiograms and some more sophisticated analyzes are performed, a hemodynamic evaluation plus carotid doppler. All these investigations, obviously, cannot be done in one day and two visits must be made.
Hypertension is a disease defined by the presence of constantly elevated blood pressure values above 140 by 90 mm of mercury. Risk factors include a high-fat diet, sedentary lifestyle and high salt intake. The latter should be a maximum of five grams per day, but there are Romanians who consume 14 g per day."
