Heroes' Day is marked by military and religious ceremonies organised by the Ministry of National Defence in the country's major garrisons.
At 12:00 noon, the names of fallen heroes from the wars fought by the Romanian Army were symbolically pronounced, bells were rung in all places of worship and a moment of silence was observed in public institutions and educational establishments.
Romanian officials present in Carol Park pronounced the names of fallen heroes, laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and attended a religious service commemorating Romanian heroes. The President of the Senate, Nicolae Ciuca, spoke about honouring the heroes of the Romanian nation.
Nicolae Ciuca: Our heroes are part of the soul of the Romanian people. They have been a wall of defence for Romania and remain for eternity a telling proof of Romanian patriotism. They are examples for all generations of Romanians to come. Let us commemorate, therefore, those who made the supreme sacrifice, let us take care of their graves and keep their memory alive by talking about their deeds, not just a few times a year, but every day.
Messages were also delivered by President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Defence Minister Angel Tilvar.
