Head of state announced plans to join the euro-zone by 2015
The President of Romania, Traian Băsescu, announced on Thursday, after the meeting with the chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, that "Romania still aims to join the euro-zone in 2015".

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, declared on Thursday, after the meeting with Traian Băsescu, that Romania confirmed its wish to join the euro-zone in 2015, adding that she appreciates this intention, given the difficulties encountered while carrying out reforms.
The German chancellor congratulated the Romanian Government on carrying out difficult reforms on the population with such determination.
Traian Băsescu declared during a press conference joined by the German chancellor that Romania did not give up on the plan of joining euro-zone in 2015.
“We are keeping out objective – and I want to ask the journalists not to smile – to join the euro-zone in 2015”, Băsescu declared.
He also said that Romania did not believe in a fragmented Europe.
President Traian Băsescu declared after the meeting with Angela Merkel that Romania was going to start a wide process of privatisation, thus mentioning the energy complexes in Turceni and Rovinari and also the Craiova thermal power plant, as well as CFR Marfă, the national freight train operating company.
“Of course, the involvement of German investors in the privatisation process is of major interest to us, taking into account the German management and technologies in the use of coal, in the energy industry and the quality of German railway technologies. We will have to wait and see if we can be convincing”, Traian Băsescu said.
President Traian Băsescu went to Berlin on a one-day official visit. During this visit, he met with German counterpart Christian Wulff and with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
