The Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, has ordered the Government's Control Body to investigate the contract with the American company Bechtel, for the construction of the Transylvania Highway.
The decision comes after the Minister Delegate for Infrastructure Projects and Foreign Investment, Dan Sova, has announced that the Romanian authorities will cancel the contract with the American company.
The project to build the Transylvania Highway has started in 2004, on the basis of a contract worth 2.2 billion euros, granted to the Bechtel company.
The Romanian state has already paid 1.4 billion euros, but Bechtel has only built 52 kilometres, out of a total of 415, that should have been ready in 2011.
