The Senate has passed a bill that will provide free legal aid to victims of crimes such as solicitation of minors for sexual purposes, child pornography, sexual harassment, torture, slavery, forced or compulsory labor.
Victims will receive financial compensation for damages as well as moral damages.
One of the initiators of the document, PNL MEP Cristian Bacanu: "This is a chapter in which the Romanian state has been deficient for far too long and we need to provide both legal assistance to victims of crime and their families, as well as compensation for the damage caused by the anti-social acts of criminals, whether it be material or moral compensation.
Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu hopes that the bill will be debated and voted on as soon as possible in the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decision-making body.
She said the law is more than necessary, given that in the first six months of the year almost 1.200 active cases of human trafficking and child trafficking were filed.
