According to the Rector of the Technical University, Radu Munteanu, such a merger is a first in Romania, given the fact that it involves two universities in two different cities.
The University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Polytechnic University of Timişoara went through a fusion process too.
The universities in Cluj and Baia Mare will form a governance structure in order to ensure the transition until the elections for the designation of the unified management is organised next spring.
The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca has nine faculties, over 730 teachers and approximately 16 000 students.
The North University of Baia Mare has three faculties, over 200 teachers and over 5 600 students.
The Rector Radu Munteanu said that the new university would be named the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. It will preserve the faculties of the University of Baia Mare, namely the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Letters.
Radu Munteanu said that he would form a series of multidisciplinary teams, for example, communication specialists and engineers, working in areas such as language or development of computer software similar to Office.
The Rector of the Technical University, Radu Munteanu, is convinced that this merger will help the Technical University to earn a better position in the international rankings.
