August 23, celebrated during communism with pomp and huge military parades, has been the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Nazism and Communism for many years.
Back in the day, on august 23, the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact was celebrated, now it is an opportunity for the younger generations to know the horrors, mass repression and suffering caused by totalitarian regimes - says President Klaus Iohannis, in the message sent on this occasion.
The head of state also mentioned that politicians who again refuse to listen to the voice of the people show that they did not understand that the victory against totalitarian and dictatorial regimes was paid for with the cost of many lives.
Prime Minister Ludovic Orban also conveys that the testimonies about those painful times are a real pleading for the condemnation of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.
The Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, signed on August 23 - 1939, meant the division of Europe between two spheres of nefarious influence: Nazi and Stalinist, and the outbreak of World War II.
