European Commission today warned Romania to go back on track to a fair reform process and refrain from any measures that would mean regress in the rule of law.
Statement was made by First EC Vice-President, Frans Timmermans, at a press conference in Brussels.
As European Commission Vice-President said, he had informed College of Commissioners about state of the rule of law in Romania, stating that Bucharest must return to a proper reform process and warned Romanian Government to refrain from taking action that might affect the Judiciary and might create impunity for officials and dignitaries.
European official recalled discussions with Romanian Prime Minister, as well as those at the expert level, on Cooperation and Verification Mechanism – references on Emergency Ordinances or Special Section for Magistrates.
Unfortunately, said Frans Timmermans, it cannot be said that Romania is on the right track, and the European Commission will have to act with the means at its disposal.
European Commissioner also said that if, for internal political reasons, Emergency Ordinances are issued, EU Executive will immediately take action, and may do that within a few days.
