EU regulations have to eliminate double standards on food products delivered on the markets of Member States, say representatives from the Visegrad Group countries - Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia - as well as from Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovenia.
The issue was discussed in the City of Visegrad, during a meeting of Agriculture Ministers.
A first document aiming to stop double standards in the food sector will be issued later this month, said Alexandru Potor, State Secretary in the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture, in an interview with Radio Romania News (Radio Romania Actualități):
Alexandru Potor: “At European level, there must be legislation to allow checks on dual quality food. It is important to have a common mechanism that each Member State can use to determine whether there are double standards on the quality of food.
There is a fairly clear timetable at European level. At the end of September, it will probably be a first communication from the Commission on this subject, with an interpretation of the current consumer protection legislation and the removal of unfair commercial practices. However, we want to have a much better applied and much clearer directive in this area that can provide a very flexible and effective instrument for each Member State to determine the situations of double standards on food quality”.
