Romania is under an obligation to issue electronic identity documents starting August 202. Next week there will be a public debate on this topic, Minister of Internal Affairs, Marcel Vela, announced.
There is a European Regulation, published in July 2019, and we need to align national legislation. New electronic identity cards which will simplify the way Romanians will be able to move within the European Union, Vela said.
Minister Marcel Vela: Electronic identification documents come with additional security features and guarantee that the person presenting the document is in fact the holder. The electronic identity card will include the healthcare card, when adding to the data in the chip a digital certificate that will be issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and which allows the holder to authenticate in the health insurance informatics platform.
Romanians will be able to chose between chip-ID card or chip-free-ID card, but starting next year, the latter cannot be used when leaving the country.
