The electronic ID card becomes available for Romanian citizens from the beginning of August, according to a regulation of the European Union.
The document will contain, among other things, personal information that can also be found on the normal identity card, plus the date of birth and the handwritten signature.
It will also have data in electronic format, such as the first name of the holder's parents, a certificate for electronic signature and biometric data, consisting of facial image and fingerprints.
The new ID cards will be smaller than the current ones.
It will replace the national health insurance card, and holders will be able to use it as a travel document.
Those who do not opt for this chip format will be provided with a simple identity card by the authorities.
