RADIO ROMANIA NEWS - Eight MEPs will visit the forests of Fagaras, Covasna and Suceava this week, with the aim of showing the impact of illegal deforestation in Romania and finding solutions to stop it. The mission of the commission is to analyze the legislation regarding the protection of forests, as well as the measures taken by the authorities to solve the problems related to the infringement procedures opened by the European Commission. Environmental activists argue that the number reported to Brussels, of 19 million cubic meters of wood from forests cut annually, does not correspond to the realities on the ground and that the estimates of the National Forestry Research Institute show a double amount compared to official reports.
