The crisis in Ukraine and Romania's support for refugees from the neighboring country were on the agenda of talks held in Bucharest today by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, with President Klaus Iohannis.
The European dignitary praised Romania for the solidarity it has shown and appreciated the involvement of civilians in the refugee issue.
President Klaus Iohannis discussed with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, about the intensification of humanitarian support to Ukraine and underlined that they are working on Romanian territory for the operationalization of a humanitarian hub as soon as possible.
Klaus Iohannis: I would like to thank the President of the European Commission for her support in setting up a logistics facility in Romania, a so-called humanitarian hub, a center for collecting and transporting international humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Regarding the situation of refugees at the border, the President of the European Commission knows that Romania will make every effort to provide assistance to any refugee from the war in Ukraine.
Romania is an example of solidarity in Europe, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who mentioned that at least one million people have left Ukraine in recent days, and Romania provided shelter and food for 55.000 people.
Ursula von der Leyen: Romania has set a moving example for the whole world. When the war started, Romania helped all the refugees from the Siret customs, offering them blankets, water, food. People have opened the doors of their own homes. Romania not only receives refugees in its homes, but also helps the Republic of Moldova and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
In addition to continued support for Ukraine, the European Union will impose very harsh sanctions on the Russian leadership so that we can reduce their ability to attack its neighbors, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who recalled that they have already introduced sanctions with an impact on the Russian economy.
On the other hand, President Klaus Iohannis mentioned that he had discussed with the European official about increasing the energy security of the European Union and stressed that it is clear that the Union's dependence on Russian gas must end and that we need to put more emphasis on alternative energy sources.
