European Commission criticizes Romania in its latest Cooperation and Verification Mechanism released on Tuesday, because it has had to express on several occasions its concerns regarding the rule of law. The report shows that Bucharest authorities did not apply recommendations regarding revision of the laws of justice, nor did they follow recommendations regarding freezing of changes in the Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code.
As regards Bulgaria, the Commission has found that progress in the CVM is sufficient to consider that it has fulfilled its commitments since joining the European Union.
RRA Special Envoy to Strasbourg, Cristian Matei: Although it is not possible to talk about an immediate lifting of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Bulgaria, there is a major difference in content and keywords in favor of Bulgaria. EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, was clear about Romania and the state of the judiciary and the fight against corruption.
Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos:The report notes that the regression registered in November 2018 has continued and that Romania did not commit itself to respecting the additional recommendations at that time. The Commission is confident that Romania can give a new impetus to the achievement of the objectives of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.
