International Science Community, Black Sea Coastal States and representatives of the European Union have adopted today in Bucharest the Declaration on Sustainable Development at the Black Sea. Signatories are committing themselves to support ecological reconstruction, to monitor climate change and to introduce green, non-polluting economy. Declaration has been signed at the end of the two-days international conference in Bucharest where Black Sea economic potential has been discussed, also environmental issues of the area, that should be addressed.
Declaration sets the basis for the first-integrated collaboration of marine research and development in the region, says President of Romanian National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology (GeoEcoMar), Adrian Stănică.
Adrian Stănică:Creating the Strategic Research and Innovation Plan for the Black Sea is the end of a process that has started a few years ago and has brought together researchers from the various Black Sea states and beyond, under coordination of the European Commission, with governmental representatives of the states around the Black Sea. There has never been such a document that sets an Agenda for the next 15 years. This Strategic Agenda will also be presented in the Competitiveness Council, the meeting of EU Research Ministers who have approved it.
Researchers have drawn attention to the fact that, in order to take advantage of the region's potential, green technologies and policies must be applied, to take account of the fact that the fish population has fallen dramatically over the last 50 years, requiring creation of protected areas for the rebuilding of marine biodiversity.
According to RRA Reporter Bogdan Isopescu, specialists have estimated that the Black Sea can become a very good laboratory for studying climate effects, with results that can be applied at a global scale.
High-level conference – titled “Sustainable Development at the Black Sea” - has been organized by Romanian Ministry of Research and Innovation and Romanian National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology (GeoEcoMar) and has been part of the Official Program of Romania’s EU Council Presidency.
