David Popovici is the world champion in the 200 meters freestyle

Romanian swimmer David Popovici won the gold medal in the 200 m freestyle on Monday night at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, with a time of 1 min 43 sec 21/100.
According to Agerpres, David Popovici (17 years old) set a new world record for juniors, after improving it, on Sunday, in the semifinals (1 min 44 sec 40/100).
David Popovici, debutant at the World Senior Championships, brought home the first world title for Romanian men's swimming. Until now, Romania had two gold medals, won by Tamara Costache (50 m freestyle, 1986) and Diana Mocanu (200 m backstroke, 2001). Romania's record at the World Cup is now three gold medals, one silver and six bronze.
David Popovici will participate in the 100 m freestyle series on June 21, the semifinals being scheduled for the same day, and the final on June 22.
