Dacian fortress Sarmizegetusa Regia reopened on Monday for visitors after having been closed for four weeks, during which work had to be done to cutt off and remove 80 sick and elderly trees that could have collapsed and jeopardize the UNESCO monument, reports Agerpres.
Sarmizegetusa Regia was closed for tourists on January 22, after the site administration received the necessary approvals to cut and extract 103 sick trees from the historical area.
For reasons related to the monument's safety, only 80 trees were extracted from the fortress, since a quarter of them had already been fallen due to the storms that took place over the past years.
History and administration experts on Sarmizegetusa Regia argue that tree cuts made within the historical site did not affect the integrity of the UNESCO monument, as the works were carried out under strict archaeological surveillance.
Over 70,000 tourists visited Sarmizegetusa Regia in 2017, 16% more than in 2016.
