Tuesday evening, at 21.00 GMT, Romanian time, Coco Galescu, the climber from Caransebeş, together with the pioneer Romeo Dunca, reached the South Pole.
They are the first Romanians to reach the southernmost point on earth, after skiing for 300 km.
The expedition was organized by the Norwegian government, the City Hall of Caransebeş and a few Romanians.
It all takes place exactly 100 years after the Norwegian Amundsen conquered The South Pole in 1911.
According to the correspondent for Radio Romania, the moment was witnessed by means of a web camera, installed at the South Pole.
The camera transmits images at a certain hour from the southernmost point on Earth.
The two Romanians traveled 300 km in two weeks, at temperatures of minus 35 degrees.
The climber Cornel Galescu stated that beyond the athletic performance, the expedition represents a symbolic act, of national dignity, as Manuela Stănescu from Radio Timişoara informed us.
Four years ago, Cornel Galescu and Romeo Dunca reached the North Pole, which represented another premiere for Romania.
