Romania and Lithuania have been convicted by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for violating the European Convention on Human Rights in the case of CIA secret prisons, according to a document published on the institution's website.
Thus, the Court considers that Romania is responsible for violating several articles, including those on the prohibition of torture, the right to liberty and security and the right to privacy.
According to the Court, between September 2003 and November 2005 there was a secret prison of the CIA on the Romanian territory, and the Bucharest authorities knew that the rights under the Convention were being violated.
Court recommends a thorough investigation of the Romanian authorities and the punishment of potential culprits.
At the same time, Romania should pay the prisoner who sued it 100,000 euros in damages.
