The farmers in wholesale market produced this year a very good crop of potatoes, but they sell them very cheap though since there are few buyers in the market.
On the wholesale produce market, the price of potatoes varies between 30 and 60 bani per kilogram, according to the manager of the Agricultural Department of Covasna, Csaba Koncz.
Currently more than half of the crop has not been sold.
Prefect Gyorgy Ervin says that local farmers are also facing strong competition from potato producers from other European countries and therefore they cannot bounce the prices.
This autumn in Covasna, it was achieved a total production of about 363 000 tons of potatoes, which means 22 000 kilograms per hectare.
Last year, due to heavy rains, the potato production was much lower (17 tons per hectare) and the potatoes were extremely expensive, 3 lei per kilogram in markets and shops.
