Human rights activists and representatives of the authorities have launched a campaign to raise awareness and prevent the exploitation of Romanian citizens who work abroad.
The campaign is being run this week until 18 October, the annual European Day against Trafficking Human Beings, and is initiated by Justice and Care Romania, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, the Border Police and the National Agency against Trafficking Human Beings.
Police officers are distributing leaflets with vital information on the rights of Romanian employees in European countries, as well as on the rights and services available to victims of human trafficking, at land border crossing points in the west of the country and in Romania's main international airports.
Around 500 victims of trafficking are identified and rescued by the authorities every year, but this is only a fraction of the hidden phenomenon of labor exploitation.
