Bulgarian border authorities and the Food Safety Agency have imposed increased controls at the border crossings of the country, to prevent spread of African swine fever, especially from Romania, where reports on August 30 say there are 800 outbreaks of such cases.
Entering Bulgarian territory by carrying pork or food products based on pork, for the purpose of personal consumption, is prohibited. Should such products be detected, they will be seized.
“We are following the situation of African swine fever in Romania, it is very worrying”, Bulgarian Deputy Agriculture Minister, Yanko Ivanov said, noting that an affected farm was just 50km from the Bulgarian border, according to The Sofia Globe.
The greatest risk of spreading the infection lies in the unregulated transport of food.
