Bucharest hosts an Inter-parliamentary Conference on the Future of the European Union. Event is organized under Romania’s EU Council Presidency and participants will adopt a document to be submitted for the European Union Summit in Sibiu, scheduled in May.
Romanian Senate President Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu spoke, in the opening, about Romanians’ strong pro-European orientation, but also about a certain feeling they have that they are still not seen as full-time Europeans.
RRA Reporter Oana Bâlă: Senate President Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu said that more than two-thirds of the Romanian citizens have positive feelings about the future of the EU. They also truly believe that the Internal Market, Cohesion Policy, Common Agricultural Policy and EU Enlargement are processes that make their everyday life better. Senate Speaker also talked about the role of national parliaments in debates on the future of EU.
Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu: As representatives of the national constituencies, we must ensure that a common vision on the future of the EU reflects on the widest and most inclusive scale the interests and concerns of all Member States. We must also get rid of any attempt to create a hierarchical system of a social organization in Europe, to reserve the right of decision only to a select number of states and to discriminate other states on account of insufficient exercise of European values.
RRA Reporter: Deputy Speaker of Chamber of Deputies, Florin Iordache, stressed in turn that Romania treats European issues with involvement and seriousness. Siegfried Mureşan (MEP, EPP) spoke on the security of the EU's external border.
Siegfried Mureşan: We will expand FRONTEX with 10,000 border guards in the coming years, make it a real EU border and coastal police, because in order to continue to travel freely and unhindered within the EU Member States, it is essential that EU's external borders are protected.
RRA Reporter: PSD Senator Gabriela Crețu said that solutions must be found to keep the EU united.
