Mayor of Bucharest, Gabriela Firea, announced, on Tuesday, that she would give up the Oxygen tax, which was scheduled to be applied starting next month for polluting cars.
A Facebook survey showed that people disagree with the tax and traffic restrictions for cars that pollute.
However, the Mayor announced that she would not abandon the Oxygen project, as it includes several several smaller ones, including planting trees, purchasing less polluting cars, creating bike lanes and checking on polluting sites.
At the end of October, the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest approved introduction of the Oxygen vignette starting from January 1, 2020, for cars under Euro 4 that circulate in Bucharest, while cars under Euro 3 would have no longer had access to the city center, even if the vignette was paid. Fines were to be applied as of next month.
