More and more British citizens currently living Transylvania are thinking of requesting Romanian citizenship, in order to be able to live permanently in Romania and to travel without restrictions anywhere in the European Union. Most likely, applications for Romanian citizenship will begin to be submitted this spring.
One of the largest British communities in Romania has been formed in Cluj. These British citizens are businessmen, students, but also teachers or musicians. Some of them have been living for five years in Romania already and have the right to claim Romanian citizenship. This is the case of golf teacher Vince Kelly, who has not yet asked for Romanian citizenship because he has not yet learned very well the Romanian language.
The rights of European citizens living in the UK, as well as the rights of British citizens residing in the European Union, will be determined by a special treaty. Signing of this treaty is scheduled for December this year.
