Bookfest International Book Fair has been officially opened on Wednesday at the Romexpo Pavilion in Bucharest. Over 150 exhibitors will offer the audience nearly one million books. Opening has been attended by President Klaus Iohannis, Romanian Minister of Culture, George Ivașcu, US Ambassador to Bucharest, Hans Klemm, other diplomats and cultural personalities.
The United States is this year’s guest of honor.
American Embassy Public Affairs Counselor Ronald Hawkins talks about the United States presence in this event:
Ronald Hawkins: "For us, it is challenging and very important to be invited to this international book fair. We wanted to do something cheerfully, creatively and to share it with the host country, Romania. We decided to focus on the southern United States and we invited four writers who have obviously been influenced by the South in their background or profession. The South too has given creative personalities, and we have chosen to bring women writers to talk about social and gender issues with Romanian writers and audiences. Plus, together with Ambassador Hans Klemm, we will also have a special event about Matei Călinescu - his Romanian teacher, as he is used to saying - because through him, Mr. Klemm has long ago found out about the culture of the country where he is now an ambassador".
Casa Radio Publishing House is present at Bookfest with over 140 titles and over 60% discounts for the radiophonic theater collection.
Bookfest ends on Sunday, 3 June, according to RRA Editor Mihaela Helmis.
