The pharmaceutical group BioNTech announced that it has started working on a vaccine adapted to the Omicron variant, which is worrying and detected in South Africa.
BioNTech said that the first steps in the development of a potential new vaccine against the Omicron variant overlap with the research needed to assess whether a new serum will be needed. This development is part of the company's standard procedure for new variants, BioNTech added.
Also, the World Health Organization warned that the Omicron variant presents a very high global risk. However, the organization points out that there are still many uncertainties regarding the level of danger and transmissibility of the variant.
BioNTech said on Friday that it expects more lab data in the next two weeks to determine if a specific Omicron vaccine is needed.
According to Reuters, rival Moderna has announced that it is already working on a redesign of its COVID-19 vaccine for future boosters. Several countries have reported cases of infection with the Omicron strain, which has led to the closure of several borders.
