"Behind the Hills" by Cristian Mungiu, is the first Romanian film included on the short list, on the Oscar nominations for the best foreign film.

For the movie "Behind the Hills", Cristian Mungiu was awarded for screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival 2012 while the main actresses have received the award for interpretation.
In 2008, the film "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days" by Cristian Mungiu was considered one of the favorites in the race for the Academy Award, in the category of "best foreign film” but it was overlooked by the members with voting rights in the American film Academy, and it was not nominated.
This oversight has led to the changing of the Academy rules who decided that nominations, at the section "best foreign film” may no longer be determined by the votes of all its members but by a special committee of filmmakers.
Tudor Caranfil, the film critic, declared for Mediafax, that the inclusion of the film "Behind the Hills" by Cristian Mungiu, on the short list of proposals for Academy Award nomination is a premiere.
