The mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, announced that the Basarab overpass would be inaugurated on Saturday for pedestrians, and on Sunday, at 6.00, it would be open to car traffic.
Sorin Oprescu said that on Saturday, at 10.00, he would expect all Bucharest citizens to come on the Basarab overpass and participate in a parade organised following the beginning of the vacation season, Mediafax informs.
The mayor said that the overpass represented a ‘very complicated’ work and that he was proud that he had managed to succeed.

The Basarab overpass will make the connection between the Nicolae Titulescu Avenue –the Orhidee Street - the Grozăveşti bridge - the Vasile Milea Avenue (for running the trams) and the Grozăveşti Street, thus complementing the main ring road of North-West Bucharest.
The project comprises two major obstacles crossings, the existing bridge over the Dâmboviţa river and the railway expanded in the North Railway Station area.
The car traffic on the roads under the Basarab overpass was resumed on both lanes, on 15 September last year.
A few days ago, the tests on the cable-stayed bridge of the Basarab overpass were made for three days.
During these tests the bridge was loaded with weights in different situations and measurements were made regarding the vertical and horizontal movements of the elements of resistance structure, so as to ensure the safety of the overpass.
