Banks will be required to resume lending in the near future in order to reduce losses caused by the difficult times that crosses in recent years and led to a large number of bad loans, number that has tripled in recent years.
Banking environment specialists said Tuesday at a conference in this field, that the resumption of credit should be made first by companies, and by small businesses and then to the public.
Nonperforming loans are those banking loans payment with delays more than 90 days.
Resumption of lending, "increasing competition" BNR vice governor, Bogdan Olteanu, said that in august that these loans reached 17.61 percent of the total, which means that about one of six is nonperforming loan, but financial analyst Dragos Cabat says we should not worry.
"For a mature market, a level of 17 percent is normal, especially in the economic situation in which Romania and the EU is", said Dragos Cabat.
The financial analyst believes that the NPL could fall through a new bank lending policy.
"Banks, if they want to regain profit, are obliged to resume the lending cycle because from there they make money in the first place.
"Mortgages can return, but especially consumer loans and credit cards.
"In these segments there are, clearly, applications from customers.
"BNR is the one to be careful never to get into the situation where it was in 2006 - 2008", said Dragos Cabat.
In the refinancing would be another solution: the extension of payment deadlines and then will decrease the monthly installments.
"Yes, but banks will not give a signal to customers that they allow them to restructure their loans, perhaps because many of customers, even the good payers, would resort to this kind of renegotiation.
"So it's a kind of psychological game between customer and banks," said the financial analyst.
Dragos Cabat stressed that the resumption of lending would mean a tightening of competition in the banking market.
This can lead to cheaper loans, from which would benefit the customers.
