A high-performance (automated) border control system has been tested for a week (29 January – 9 February 2018) at the Calafat-Vidin Border Crossing Point (Romania-Bulgaria), in the framework of the ABC Gates for Europe - ABC4EU Development Project, a European project in which Romania, through the Border Police, has the unique role to provide terrestrial infrastructure for its application – Romanian Border Police announced in a press release.
The pilot project, attended by 14 partners from seven European countries, involves the use of automated passport control and vehicle control at land border crossings and the use of facial recognition and verifying systems, by querying database.
With a budget of nearly € 17 million, the project will facilitate border control procedures for citizens across the EU, while respecting data and privacy protection.
Such equipment is also being tested at seaports and airports crossing points in Spain and Portugal, Romanian Border Police said.
