Former World and Olympic gymnastics champion Andreea Răducan has announced on Thursday at a press conference that she is resigning from the position of President of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, following failure of national women and men gymnastics teams to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
"Failure to achieve the goal of qualifying the teams for the Tokyo Olympics made me think that there is a need for change, that maybe I am not the right person to run the Federation. There are members of the Executive Committee who do not want to make a change, saying there are no solutions. I do not take responsibilty for what others will not do next, which is why I decided, after the Executive Committee meeting, to resign from the leadership of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation. I think we get in these kinds of situations also because of too much pride”, says Răducan.
Răducan, elected as President on August 4, 2017, supported replacement of coaches Nicolae Forminte (women) and Marius Urzică (men), to whom she accused of failing to meet their goals, namely to qualify with the teams at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Romanian women's and men's national teams, led by coaches Nicolae Forminte and Marius Urzică, missed qualification at the Tokyo Olympics following poor results recorded at the World Championships of artistic gymnastics in Stuttgart.
Romania will be represented at the Tokyo Olympics only individually, by athletes Maria Holbură (individual compound) and Marian Drăgulescu (jumps).
