Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu signed a joint declaration in Rome with her Italian counterpart Carlo Nordio on closer judicial cooperation in criminal matters in order to bring back to the country convicted persons who are evading the execution of their sentences.
In an internet message, Alina Ghorghiu mentions that in 2023 the Romanian state brought 120 fugitive convicts from Italy, and since the beginning of this year another two.
She says she has received assurances from her Italian counterpart that the situation, which he considers unacceptable, is that people who have been correctly convicted in an EU country and detained in Italy are not handed over.
"Either the Italian judiciary finds a solution, or we make every effort to change the law" - is the message Alina Gorghiu writes that she received from the Italian justice minister.
