Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has decided to decorate former US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for the inclusion of Romania in the Visa Waiver Program.
Mayorkas - who held the post during the administration of Democrat Joe Biden - is receiving the National Order of Faithful Service in the rank of Grand Cross.
According to an announcement made by the federal government in Washington in early January, in the last days of President Biden's term, Romanian citizens will be able to travel to the United States without visas as of March 31.
Before starting their journey to the United States, Romanian citizens will have to obtain a travel authorization valid for two years, with unlimited entry and exit from the United States.
The document is obtained electronically through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization - ESTA - and costs 21 US dollars.
Without this ESTA authorization, no person will be boarded by any airline to the United States.
