African swine fever virus in Romania

25 Iulie 2018, 16:50

African swine fever hit Romania over the past few weeks, causing lots of damages in the South-East and now continues to expand. New outbreaks have been detected in the counties of Bihor, Ialomita, Constanta and Sălaj. Worst situation is in Tulcea County, where at the largest pig farm, 30,000 of approximately 45,000 pigs have already been killed.

Bulgaria has set a wired fence of about 133 kilometers across its land border with Romania, to prevent the spread of the African swine fever epidemic.

African swine fever is a highly contagious disease that affects pigs. It does not affect humans.

Other countries affected are Hungary, Russia, Poland and Ukraine, according to Reuters
