The Chamber of Deputies adopted today, as the decision-making body, a series of additions to the law on the regime of arms and ammunition, and the law will be sent to the President for promulgation. The document retains the provision that a maximum of two weapons may be purchased with authorisation for defence and security purposes, after the limitation had been removed in the draft passed by the Senate.
The right of possession can only be granted for hunting, shooting, collectors' or self-defence weapons. The keeping of weapons and ammunition at the owner's home or residence and in other premises notified in advance to the police is done in specially designated places, with the exception of defence and security weapons, which may be found on the owner's person.
Compared with the form tacitly passed by the Senate, which removed the limitation on the number of defence and security weapons that can be purchased, the original form has been returned.
Holders of a licence may only purchase two such weapons. Holders of the European Firearms Passport can also travel to third countries with the weapons and ammunition registered in it, without the need for the Romanian police to issue an exit permit or other documents.
According to the legislation, defence and security weapons may be purchased only by dignitaries, magistrates, diplomats, military and police officers, while they are in active service, but also upon retirement, transfer to reserve, as the case may be, as well as by persons included in witness protection programmes during the period they are in this capacity.
