Since Mona Pivniceru stepped down as Justice Minister in order to take over a judge seat at the Constitutional Court, the office has been temporarily held by Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
After weighing several options, Ponta chose Robert Cazanciuc for the post, because, the Prime Minister argued, he is in a position to bring stability into the system.
"He is a magistrate and he worked as secretary general with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My goal was to ensure stability in the ministry. I hope Cazanciuc will bring a much-needed type of balance in the relationship of the Justice Ministry with the Superior Council of Magistracy, with the institutions in the judicial system, as well as with the European Commission", Victor Ponta said.
Cazanciuc’s nomination by Victor Ponta was accepted by President Traian Basescu, who signed an order to release him of his responsibilities as a magistrate.
The Superior Council of Magistracy also acknowledged his resignation, which was the next step in the procedure.
