A man threw a Molotov cocktail at the door of the Israeli Embassy in Bucharest, but the incident caused no injuries or damage. Counter-terrorism forces immediately arrested the 34-year-old man, believed to be Syrian, and took him to the police station.
Ovidiu Marincea, SRI spokesman: "The man threatened to set himself on fire and tried to cause damage with a Molotov cocktail. The SRI anti-terrorist brigade workers who provided security for the Israeli Embassy detained the suspect and proceeded to extinguish the fire. There was no major material damage, apart from a poster on the door at the entrance of the embassy. Subsequently, the suspect was handed over to the police for investigation and is currently in the custody of the Romanian Police."
According to Romanian Police spokesman Georgian Dragan, the gesture was allegedly caused by personal dissatisfaction. Judicial sources say the man was upset that he had not obtained an entry visa to Israel and had not been granted an audience. Israel's ambassador in Bucharest, Reuven Azar, believes the act was terrorist.
Reuven Azar: "Terrorism knows no borders and today a violent extremist attacked our embassy with a Molotov cocktail. But thanks to the prompt action of the Romanian law enforcement, the man was detained and taken in for questioning. I want to assure you that we will never surrender to terrorism."
Police are continuing their investigations to establish the exact circumstances of the incident.
