Romania had 763 kilometers of highways last year, representing 4.3% of all national roads and nearly 40 times more kilometers of cobbled roads and land, respectively 30,125 kilometers, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics, published on Wednesday.
On the other hand, almost half (41.4%) of the length of the upgraded roads has been outdated.
At 31 December 2017, public roads totaled 86,099 km, out of which 17,654 km (20,5%) national roads, 35,149 km (40,8%) county roads and 33,296 km (38,7%), communal roads.
European Commission has published a document this month (Preliminary 2017 road safety statistics) according to which Romania ranks last in the EU in terms of road safety, given the highest mortality rate in the EU (98 fatal accidents per one million inhabitants, double the EU average).
Looking ahead
Building on the Ministerial Declaration on Road Safety from March 2017, the Commission is currently working on a new road safety framework for 2020-2030, together with a series of concrete measures contributing to safer roads. This could include a revision of the European rules on vehicle safety, on infrastructure safety management and an initiative for the safe transition to cooperative, connected and autonomous mobility.
The Commission is planning to present these measures in spring 2018.
