Romanian Orthodox Church celebrates, on January 7, together with the Greek-Catholics, John the Baptist, the saint who baptized Jesus Christ in the River Jordan, the last prophet of the Old Testament. Celebration comes second day after the Epiphany Day (Boboteaza, in Romanian), when there are special religious services when priests bless the waters and then use the holy water to bless people’s houses.
These two religious celebrations are among the most important in Romania.
Nearly 2 million Romanians bear the name of John.
